Welcome to the world's most famous tavern
Hofbräuhaus Munich
Hofbräuhaus was founded on September 27, 1589, by Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria. Originally, it was created solely to supply beer to the Bavarian court. Thanks to the Reinheitsgebot (Bavaria’s ancient Beer Purity Law), high-quality beer has been brewed here since the brewery’s very first day. In 1828, King Ludwig I opened Hofbräuhaus to the public by issuing a decree that allowed the serving of food and drinks, officially turning it into a tavern in Munich.

The great popularity of the Hofbräuhaus led to an increasing lack of space. As a result, the brewery was moved to Haidhausen, where the present-day Hofbräukeller is located. Since 1988, the brewery has been based in Riem. On May 22, 1896, beer was brewed for the last time at the Hofbräuhaus at Platzl. In 1896/1897, the Hofbräuhaus was converted into the tavern as we know it today. Despite extensive renovation work, the beer continued to be served. Already on February 9, 1897, the “new” Schwemme, where the beer was previously brewed, was opened as a dining room.
