Discover the Charms of Elisabethmarkt

A Blend of History and Modernity in Schwabing

The Elisabethmarkt, located in Munich’s Schwabing district, has been a cherished marketplace for over a century. Established in 1903, it was named after Empress Elisabeth of Austria, affectionately known as Sisi. The market originated from the former Maffeianger market, which was relocated to Elisabethplatz due to urban development plans.

In September 2024, the Elisabethmarkt reopened after an extensive renovation aimed at preserving its historical charm while introducing modern amenities. The revitalized market features 23 new stalls offering a diverse range of products, including fresh produce, meats, baked goods, and wines. Notable vendors include the Fritz Mühlenbäckerei, renowned for its organic baked goods, and the Herrmannsdorfer Metzger, known for high-quality meats and sausages.

A highlight of the renovation is the addition of two publicly accessible, greened rooftop terraces, providing visitors with a unique vantage point to observe the bustling market below. The market also boasts improved infrastructure, such as enhanced cooling and storage facilities, as well as a barrierefreie “Toilette für alle” (accessible restroom). The redesign emphasizes sustainability and community engagement, incorporating extensive use of wood and green spaces to create a welcoming environment for both vendors and visitors.
